9.
The morning was totally awkward. But not at first. Actually, while we were in bed it was great, still. We kissed a little, tight morning kisses, both of us mindful of our fuzzy teeth and morning breath. It was nice to wake up with someone again, warm and naked and dry and smooth under the sheets. Then we got up. We both had to use the bathroom, then I pulled on my shorts and went to make coffee and start some breakfast.
Matt came out half dressed, thanked me for the coffee, and from there it slowly got uncomfortable. We had nothing to say to each other, and the intimacy we’d built up last night seemed inappropriate now. He’d been in my kitchen before, as my friend, just for a quick beer, a little neighborly chat. But this was more, and yet not enough.
I felt weird cooking breakfast, like some sucker who’d just had a one night stand but thought they had a new boyfriend. I’d been that sucker a few times before, I knew how it felt. I looked at Matt, who was staring out my window sipping his coffee, trying to act relaxed. “You want to leave, don’t you?”
“Yeah. Sorry.”
“It’s okay. You can, I promise I won’t cry.”
He laughed and spilled his coffee a little, and then I laughed at him wiping coffee off of his toes. And just like that it was okay again, we were back to buddies. He stayed for breakfast, scrambled eggs and brown-and-serve sausages and toast, and then helped me clean up. We got dressed and went out to mow our respective lawns, tossing each other a casual wave goodbye.
I kept fairly busy the rest of the weekend. My friend Tara invited me over on Saturday night, and I left stuffed and half-drunk. Apparently, for Tara pregnancy was an excuse to cook massive quantities of somewhat unrelated foodstuffs. We had burgers, quiche, guacamole and chips, salad, and ravioli. Her husband Rob looked like he’d gained a few pounds, so I assumed she was cooking like this on the regular. We had a blast, though, and I left happy.
I went to Sophia’s for breakfast on Sunday and played soccer with Alex while Arianna looked for four leaf clovers in the lawn. It was awesome spending time with my niece and nephew, and I decided I should do more of it. They were getting older, and there was no reason I couldn’t take them out someplace fun once in a while, just to be with them, and not only when Sophie and Tyler needed a babysitter.
The week was busy at work, and on Thursday Marcus and I left the office late and went out for dinner. He looked stressed but he didn’t want to talk about his wife or his mother in law, so we half-watched a baseball game on the TV above the restaurant’s bar and talked about people from work. We were cracking up, making up ridiculous backstories for the people we didn’t know and recounting office rumors about the people we did.
